Participants in the Cloverbud Discovery Day learned about environmental education through a variety of hands-on educational experiences.  Lessons were taught using the Science Discovery Series Curriculum, Project Wet Curriculum, Project Learning Tree Curriculum and an OSU Cloverbud Nature Detectives Publication.  Youth learned about many of the products which come from our forests.  Youth enjoyed a Nature Detective hike outside in the snow.  Participants learned about natural resources and participated in two demonstrations which helped explain the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources.  Youth watched, “Bottom of the Barrel” which taught them about the nonrenewable resource, oil.  The children also participated in The Incredible Journey activity which demonstrated how water droplets move through the water cycle.  Each youth created a water cycle bracelet/keychain to take home with them.  Participants learned about Barn Owls by watching a movie and dissecting owl pellets.  When surveyed one youth responded that they had learned about how to make a bracelet which represented the water cycle.  One of the participants replied that they had learned about oil.  Another child responded that they had learned about how to use gas and that it was a nonrenewable resource.  When asked how they could use natural resources wisely, 100% of the participants stated that they could use less gas/oil.  Plan to attend an upcoming 4-H Discovery Day!

"I Share My Mom" poem

This poem was published in the National 4-H News in April 1955 and
was written by Mrs. Martin Clawson of Reily, Ohio.

I Share My Mom

A 4-H leader, she’s a “Mom” to all-
A friend to the big and to the small.
She’s seen us through our younger years,
And shared our joys and sometimes tears.

She’s taught us to sew and finish a seam
A compliment to us and she will beam.
We learned to model and win with grace,
And also lose with a smile on our face.

So now as we must older grow
We think back and begin to know-
Her guidance and friendship in every way
We can never fully repay.

National Ag Day Essay Contest

National Ag Day Essay Contest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Beth Buchanan (816) 584-8444; bbuchanan@mccormickcompany.com
National Ag Day Essay Contest Announces February 4 Deadline
Students may submit written essay and/or video on 2011 theme:
“American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.”

OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS

The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) calls on ninth- to 12th-grade students to submit an original, 450-word essay or a two-minute video essay about the importance of agriculture. This year’s theme is “American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.” and the deadline is Feb. 4, 2011. The ACA asks teachers and parents to encourage student participation.
The theme – “American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.” – presents an opportunity for students to address how the agriculture industry continues to feed a growing population. Entrants may choose to either write an essay and/or create a video that acknowledges the many ways today’s growers are providing a safe, stable food supply and sustaining the significant role agriculture plays in everyday life.
“CHS believes in the mission of Ag Day,” says Linda Tank, vice president, marketing and communications, CHS Inc. “The company is proud to help support the 2011 essay and video contest for students. Today’s youth are vibrant and resourceful. We want to recognize their ability to help communicate agriculture’s ever-important role in keeping our nation’s food, fiber and energy systems strong. We truly look forward to reviewing the written and video essays that students develop around the theme, “American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.”
The national written essay winner receives a $1,000 prize and round-trip ticket to Washington, D.C., for recognition during the Celebration of Ag Dinner held March 15 at Whitten Patio at the USDA. During dinner, the winner will have the opportunity to read the winning essay as well as join with industry representatives, members of Congress, federal agency representatives, media and other friends in a festive ag celebration. The video essay winner wins a $1,000 prize, and the winning video will play during the Celebration of Ag Dinner.
This is the 38th anniversary of National Ag Day. The goal of the ACA is to provide a spotlight on agriculture and the food and fiber industry. The ACA not only helps consumers understand how food and fiber products are produced, but also brings people together to celebrate accomplishments in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.
The Ag Day Essay Contest is sponsored by CHS Inc., The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal, National Association of Farm Broadcasting, National Agri-Marketing Association, Country Living Association and McCormick Company.
All written entries should be sent to: Ag Day Essay Contest, Agriculture Council of America, 11020 King Street, Suite 205, Overland Park, KS 66210, or submitted by email to essay@agday.org . Students may upload video essays at http://agday.leapfile.net and follow the directions on the page, or students may choose to mail video entries to the address above on a compact disc. Visit www.agday.org or www.hpj.com/agdayessay to read official contest rules and for more details regarding entry applications.

Youth Enjoy a Day of Discovery

Youth Enjoy a Day of Discovery

Hertford County youth enjoyed a day of discovery with 4-H on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2010.  This special day of discovery was planned for youth ages 5-8 years old to introduce them to the Hertford County 4-H Program.  Cloverbud Discovery Day participants included Stephan Shearin, Lindsay Williams, Alice Williams, Cannon Frye, Jace Frye, Catie Wise, Jacob Sellers, Samuel Sellers and Wynter Taylor.  These 4-Her’s enjoyed a fun-filled day of activities!  During the day camp the children learned about the food guide pyramid, eating healthy and getting exercise.  The youth participated in the Cloverbud Olympics and other games which gave them the opportunity to get their daily exercise during the camp.  The campers learned about their environment by taking a hike to the park, participating in a nature scavenger hunt and playing tree bingo.  Youth also learned about owls through dissecting owl pellets to find out what the owl had eaten.  To celebrate Veteran’s Day the participants were taught about this special holiday and why it is so important to recognize our veterans.  The youth enjoyed a story about thankfulness and created Thankfulness Trees to take home with them as they celebrate Thanksgiving.  Do you think that your child would enjoy a fun day of hands-on learning?  Educational opportunities provided through the Hertford County 4-H program are open to all area youth ages 5-19 years old.  More educational programs will be hosted throughout the year so please contact Sherry Channell at the Hertford County Extension Office at (252) 358-7822 or by email at sherry_channell@ncsu.edu to find out more!  You can also check us out online at http://hertford.ces.ncsu.edu and follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HertfordNCCES.
