4-H Food, Fun and Reading Awards Program

4-H Food, Fun and Reading Awards Program

North Carolina Cooperative Extension partnered with the Elizabeth S. Parker Memorial Library to host the 4-H Food, Fun and Reading Program!  Nineteen youth participated throughout this six week long program.  Participants included Bryson Andrews, DaisJa Burke, Helen Canipe, Watt Canipe, Shae Derose, Hailey Foster, Isabella Henderson, Marlon Kuenstler, Devon Mitchell, Dexter Musick, Jacob Sellers, Samuel Sellers, Wynter Taylor, Tyree Whitehead, Tyriek Whitehead, Dakota Hale, Cannon Frye, Jace Frye and Ethan Allen.  The goals of the program were to encourage youth to make healthly choices, help them to develop good health/nutrition habits and to promote reading skills in youth.  During the program Beverly Warrick, the Branch Manager for the library, taught the children about the library website and took the children on a tour of the children’s area of the library.  Gina Bonsu, 4-H EFNEP Program Assistant, provided weekly lessons to teach youth about the five food groups and all about eating healthy foods.  The Hertford County 4-H program also partnered with the Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center.  Debbie Klingler from the RCCHC Diabetes Program provided a program for the participants to teach them more about the vegetable group.  Another partner for this program was the Hertford County Public Health Authority.  Susan Askew, the Director of the Community Health Services, provided a program for the children to teach them about the fruit group.  Sherry Channell, Hertford County 4-H Agent, provided hands-on educational programs throughout the Food, Fun and Reading Program.  Youth were challenged to read as many books as they could throughout this program.  The participants in Food, Fun and Reading read over 600 books during this six week program!!  Devon Mitchell received a prize for reading the most books during the program.  Youth were also responsible for completing an activity folder of nutrition related worksheets.  Three youth tied for the most complete activity folder; these youth were Tyree Whitehead, Tyriek Whitehead and Jace Frye.  This program would not have been possible without the assistance of many wonderful volunteers which included the following; Starbrina Bishop, Anthony Bowser, Caroline Stephenson, Phyllis Parker, Beverly Warrick, SuEllen Askew, and Linda Shotwell.  The Hertford County 4-H Program is working to plan the next Food, Fun and Reading Program.

You could win a Sheep!!

Youth Conservationist Program
The future of agriculture and especially of our heritage breeds of livestock rests with our youth. This program is a way of enabling youth to experience the joys and responsibilities of conserving heritage wool sheep breeds. It is a way of introducing the breeds to individuals who otherwise might never know about them or get involved with them.

The Youth Conservation Program was established in 1998 when Richard and Donna Larson gave one aspiring young shepherd a Registered Karakul ewe. The program has grown over the years. In 2011, seventeen heritage breed sheep will be awarded to a new group of aspiring young shepherds.

Visit this website to learn about how you could win a sheep!!!
