HERTFORD COUNTY 4-H SALUTE TO VETERANS HELD AT C. S. BROWN CULTURAL ARTS CENTER


On behalf of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and Hertford County Cooperative Extension, we would like to say thank you to all who participated in the Hertford County 4-H Salute to Veterans Program.   The event took place on Friday, November 9th at the C. S. Brown Cultural Arts Center in Winton.  Included in the program were the following: Presentation of the flags by the Hertford County High JROTC, Welcome, “National Anthem”, Invocation, Short History of Veteran’s Day, “America the Beautiful” sung by Travis Gatling of Hertford County High, Meaning of the flag,
4-H Veteran’s Day Essay, Photo, and Art contest winners, Testimony from Veterans, “Taps” played by Larry Gaines in remembrance of POWs/MIAs, Closing remarks, Benediction, and Spaghetti luncheon for Veterans.
Hertford County 4-H would like to congratulate the following winners of the 4-H Veteran’s Day Essay, Photo, and Art contest:  Serena Merritt, 1st Place Elementary Art; Marlon Kunstler, 1st Place Elementary Essay; Julienne Lequin, 1st Place, Middle School Art; Andreina Velez, 1st Place, High School Art.
As we reflect upon the challenges that face individuals and families in today’s society, we know that Cooperative Extension is as important as it was when it was created in the country almost 100 years ago.  We thank those who invest and participate in the programs that help people put knowledge to work. Private support will enable Cooperative Extension to stay on the forefront of educating our clientele throughout our state and in all 100 counties. On Saturday, November 10th the Hertford County 4-H Robo Bears traveled to Cary, North Carolina to compete in the Local Qualifier for First Lego League Robotics Tournament.  The Hertford County 4-H Robo Bears team is comprised of students from four Hertford County Public Schools.  Based out of Ahoskie Elementary, the team includes members from the 4th and 5th grades, as well as members from Hertford County Middle School, Hertford County High School, Hertford County Early College High School, and C. S. Brown High School.  The Hertford County 4-H Robo Bears met over the past two months to prepare for the 2012 First Lego League Senior Solutions Challenge.  The team built and programmed a Lego Mindstorm robot to accomplish several missions relating to mobility loss and older adults.  In addition, the team researched, wrote, and performed a presentation for the judges based on mobility issues, finding innovative solutions, and fostering independent living among seniors.   The First Lego League is a robotics program developed by FIRST Foundation to inspire and recognize science and technology.  The program provides young people a chance to experience technology hands on through robotics engineering and a chance to solve real world problems.  For more information about First Lego League, please visit www.usfirst.org.  The Hertford County 4-H Robo Bears would like to thank the following generous sponsors who provided their time, energy, and resources to make this important STEM opportunity possible: North Carolina A & T State University, North Carolina State University, Hertford County Cooperative Extension, Hertford County Public Schools, Dr. Michael Perry – Superintendent, Parent Team at Ahoskie Elementary School, Mr. Stan Warren – Principal, Ms. Kim Scott Assistant Principal, Mr. Gonzalo Pit Pit – 5th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Renee Lassister – Parent Volunteer, Mr. Jochen Kunstler – Parent Volunteer, Hertford County Office of Aging, Ms. Shirley Bunch – Community Volunteer, W. 2011 Parent's Day Out

Upcoming Events

Hot off the press is the new addition of the 4-H newsletter.  Click here to view the newsletter and see all the upcoming events for Hertford County 4-H'ers.  Also, remember it is re-enrollment time!!  Get ahead of the game and get your enrollment forms done early.  This will save you time when your youth would like to participate in a 4-H program.  To get your forms you can come by the office or click here  and look under featured links for Enrollment Packet.  There you will need to print out the enrollment form, medical and informed consent and print and keep a copy of the code of conduct for you and your youth to review.  As always if you have any questions or need assistance contact the office at (252)358-7822 or email Crystal Smith at crystal_smith@ncsu.edu.
